Novel Writing Week

The 3 Day Novel Contest
Labour day long weekend is when the 3-Day Novel Writing Contest takes place. I have participated in this contest once. Two years ago. It was awesome. I had a ton of fun and learned a lot about what I was capable of as a writer.

I was able to write a hundred pages, which turned out to be about 30k words in three days. Lots of people can do better than that (I’m a slow typer) but I was very pleased with myself.

This year I took labour day weekend off from work with the intention of entering again. I was going to write a King Wakefield novel or maybe three of their short stories.

But I’ve changed my mind.

Good News and Bad News
It’s mostly good news so I’ll start with the bad news. I don’t know if you have been keeping up with my progress on The Ronos Trilogy but by the time Catalyst was published I had a first draft of the other two books in the trilogy.

The bad news is that I have scrapped the first draft of book 3 of The Ronos Trilogy. I had like 70k words but as of a month ago I had zero.

There is only one reason a writer would scrap a draft and start over: they thought of a better idea.

I was finishing up the final draft of Beacon when I started to get a new idea. It started out as it always does, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” and I had a new opening for book three that lead to a whole new plot and conflict. Once I had it all worked out I realized I had somehow stumbled onto something amazing and it would be extremely stupid for me to ignore it.

Novel Writing Week
Since I got the new idea I have written 20k words. If Book 3 ends up as long as Catalyst and Beacon then I still have 70-80k words to go. School starts on September 3.

That means I have to write 70-80k between now and september 3.

I’m a big fan of marathon writing but I haven’t written that many words in that short of time. I have high hopes. The last couple days I’ve been working on a road map of events and what’s on the horizon is exciting enough for me to keep motivated.

I’m so excited to read book 3 and I want to get it in your hands as soon as possible.
