Driven to Inspiration

As a writer my inspiration and story ideas mostly come from two different places. One is that I have really cool dreams. There are times when I wake up and just start writing before I forget the awesomeness that I just experienced.

I also get a ton of story ideas just from driving. They come to me while I’m driving and think to myself, ” I wonder what would happen to me if…” That’s how the beginning (inciting incident) of Catalyst came to me. I was driving to Calgary from Edmonton and while looking in my rear view mirror I thought to myself, “I wonder what would happen if Edmonton exploded right now.” With that my imagination was free to run wild for the rest of my trip to Edmonton. My whole family happened to be in Edmonton at that moment (don’t remember why I was leaving them) so that’s why Mac’s entire family is in Northgate when it explodes. By the time I got to Calgary I had already joined the city explosion story with another story idea I already had about a mysterious planet with deadly gas.

Driving makes me day dream a lot about the scene around me. Is that a good thing? I’ve only been in one fender bender and it wasn’t from day dreaming, it was from ice. But that’s a long sad story so I’m not telling it.

The reason I bring up driving and getting inspired is because I got a major dose of inspiration the other day. If I didn’t have school to contend with I would already have written several thousand words of it. The story just came to me all at once while I was driving back to my house from my older sisters. I was driving north on Terwillegar Drive, one of the few spots in south Edmonton where you have a clear view of downtown, and I thought to myself, “I wonder what would happen if…” I won’t tell you what the if is. The story idea is still too fresh and needs time to ferment and be revised but the idea is super cool and got me very excited.

I don’t know when I’ll get time to write this story. The tentative title is Hope in the Darkness but that mostly because I’ve been listening to a lot of Mumford and Sons of late. I won’t be doing this story for NaNoWriMo this year, despite the fact that I really want to, but I could see this being a solid story idea for a Three Day Novel Contest attempt.

Is it labour day yet? I want to get this story out of me.

I daydream while driving too. 🙂 Something about sitting there watching the world pass by just sets the creative brain moving. i have a digital voice recorder i use to “take notes” sometimes when the ideas really get flowing.
